Tuesday, May 4, 2021 - Packer Day/Breeding Stock

The May cow sale consisted of 112 pairs, 167 bred cows and 27 breeding bulls. Although the top end wasn’t as fancy as last month, the trade was active as these pairs topped at $2250.00.  48 pairs with the most eye appeal brought $1700 to $2250.  A middle cut of 32 pairs sold from $1500 - $1700 w/the balance consisted of older, plainer or smaller framed cows with calves and they traded homes from $1475 and down.

The bred cow market was active considering it’s the 1st of May and a lot of people are done calving.  Most of the 3rd periods were cows from customers that drew the line and sold any cow that was yet to calve!  That said the top end of those 3rd trimester cows sold from $1200-$1600. The balance traded at $1175 and down.  The most interest seemed to be in the fall calving cows and they topped at $1650.  The most attractive cut of these sold from $1300 to $1650 and the balance were marked from $1250 and down.

The breeding bull market wasn’t as good as last month as most people have their bulls purchased and ready to turn out.  That said the top bulls sold from $1600 to  $1950 with the balance $1425 and down.

337 slaughter cattle including 76 fed steers and heifers that sold with weak demand as beef processing has slowed along with the falling merc has caused packers to also slow their needed procurement numbers!

However, slaughter cows and bulls seemingly haven't been affected by the same problems as their market remains strong.
