Tues., January 8, 2019 - Packer Day-Bred Cow Sale

235 bred cows went before a very large, receptive and competitive crowd.  The auction was very good, especially for the young spring calving cows from the herd dispersions.

A few bred heifers were sold with a top of $1500 for four 1160# fancy blacks.  The rest brought $1125/down.

3 and 4 year olds had a top of $1700 for 5 head of 1632# fancy blacks.  The rest of the best sold from $1350 to $1575 with the lesser ones at $1200/down.

5 and 6 year olds topped at $1825 for 5 extra fancy blacks weighing 1650#.  Average quality weighing 1300#/up brought $1400-$1700 and the lower end $1300/down.

7 and 8 year olds were not as popular with the best bringing $1000-$1250 and everything else $900/down.

Solid mouth 9 and 10 year olds brought $750 to $950 for the best and $700/down for the rest.

Aged and broken mouth cows sold from $875 to $1000 for a few fancy ones with the rest down from there and the very lower end including some very small, thin, and poor quality selling near slaughter price.

Compared to our last sale on December 18, slaughter steers & heifers topped at 124.00/cwt.  The less than ideal conditions the last 60 days have left many cattle carrying extra mud which has negatively affected yield & grade in many instances.  Also, this was our first sale with the BQA requirements on fed cattle.  If you have not completed this and have fed cattle to sell in 2019, refer to the Illinois Beef Assoc. website or contact us here at the Barn!
