November 6, 2018 Special Cow Sale
145 cows sold tonight
including 16 pairs. The sale results reflected the big drop the slaughter cow
market has taken. In figuring cow prices, people must understand that the
slaughter price for cows is now in the 30 cent to 45 cent bracket and bred cows
did not have the usual support of a good slaughter price. Also, we are headed
into the winter and feed is iffy in some places. Plus, there were not many front
end quality cows from the popular dispersions in this sale. And, many potential
cow buyers are still harvesting and haven’t had time to cull and think about
buying replacements yet. Very few 3rd period cows were offered as
nearly all were spring calvers.
The few pairs brought up to $1425 for the best, $1000-
$1250 for average, and $975/down for the rest.
Just 4 bred heifers sold with a couple of blacks at
$1175. Only 13 head of 3 and 4 year old spring calvers sold and the best brought
from $1000-$1225. 5-6 year olds sold from $900-$1150 for the best, $700-$850 for
average, and $650/down for the rest.
The older cows, 7 years and up, were more at mercy of
the slaughter market with only a hand full above $900. Most brought a small
premium to slaughter price, or stopped at kill price if not the very best.
Thursday is a CAB feeder sale with lots of top quality calves and yearlings
offered.
634 total head today including 250 head of steers & heifers. The fed market was near steady w/last week on choice consignments, however, the mixed grades and/or select grades sold 1.00 to 3.00 lower.
Big runs of cull cows and bulls are happening everywhere and the price discounts reflect this accordingly! Bulk of the cows sold from 32.00 to 42.00!
