Tues., January 9, 2018 - Packer Day/Bred Cow Sale
A nice crowd was in attendance for this monthly cow offering.
215 cows sold in tonight's special bred cow sale. There weren't many top end 3 to 6 year old cows in the sale, so it wasn't possible to get a definite price read, but they generally ranged from $1250 to $1550. Older cows made up most of the run with a few middle aged mixed in. The older cows sold at a small premium to slaughter prices with the larger ones with some quality and eye appeal topping well above market price. The best middle aged cows sold as much as $200 above kill price.
A few cow/calf pairs of varying sizes and quality brought from $1350 to $1650 for the best.
21 purebred cows from Hobbs Angus 3 to 6 years old weighed 1435# and averaged $1665 with a top of $1950 for 2 head.
A total of 35 bred heifers sold with 15 of the top heifers in the 3rd stage bringing $1500. Overall the 35 heifers weighed 1065# and averaged $1440 for the whole group including 1st and 2nd periods.
The next cows will be Saturday, January 27 and feature 200 top bred heifers including the annual Kocher Farm Offering.
Compared to the Dec. 19th sale (the last sale with comparable numbers) slaughter steers and heifers sold 2.00 to mostly 3.00 higher. Today's top was 127.25. Consignments short on finish or carrying extra mud were slow to sell.
Cull cows were 1.00 to 2.00 higher with bulls stesady. Several cows showing the effects of the winter weather!
