Tues., May 1, 2018 - Packer Day
Special Breeding Stock Sale 5-1-18
252 total bulls, cows, and calves on cows sold this evening. With
the farming season going full speed ahead, it was a very meager
crowd. This may have affected prices somewhat, but there were far
larger reasons for lower prices. Foremost, 3rd period
cows will calve in May, June, and July and were sold because of
this, but most everyone else is on this same schedule and don’t want
late calvers either. Compounding this with the lack of grass,
shortage of hay and a weak slaughter market and you have a soft
market. Several of the top selling cows were true fall calving and
were bred that way.
13 bulls sold with the best mature ones with a pedigree and good eye
appeal bringing from $1500-$2025. The rest brought $1400/down.
51 cow/calf pairs sold with 19 heifer pairs going from $1500-$2000
for the best and $1325-$1475 for the rest. Seven 4-6 year olds
topped at $1850 with the lower end $1400/down. The 25 older pairs
had a $1685 top with most from $1400-$1550. The rest brought less as
many had blemishes, bad udders, were thin, or of poor quality.
A
few bred heifers were short on quality for the most part and brought
from $1050-$1325.
The 3-4 year olds brought from $1000-$1225. The rest brought from
slaughter price to $950.
5-6 year olds brought from $1000-$1200 for the best. There was a lot
of “variety” in this group with the rest again from slaughter price
to $950. Older cows had very few break the $1000 figure with most
selling around the slaughter price.
The next feeder special is Thursday, May 10
Slaughter steers & heifers sold steady to firm on a top of 130.25. Bulk of the cattle were steady with last week as trade volume remains light with most farmers having corn & beans on their minds!
Cull cows sold steady with bulls also steady even though the top of the bull market was not tested!
