Tues., December 5, 2017 - Packer Day/Bred Cow Sale
Bred Cow Sale Fairview Sale Barn December 5, 2017
422 bred cows and pairs sold to a big and receptive audience tonight. A large portion of the younger cows saw very active trade with good demand with only moderate demand as the quality dropped off and age increased. Featured were 119 head of outstanding reputation 3-4-5 year old black spring calving cows with quality to burn in perfect flesh to calve. They weighed 1200 lbs and averaged $1676 with a top of $1875 for six head. A consignment of purebred Angus cows, mostly young, averaged $1483. Another consignment of 32 young cows much lower in quality averaged $1203.
The rest of the run was very mixed in size, age, and quality. Comparing to recent years, with the slaughter price now only in the $40’s and $50s plus lower feeder and fed cattle markets, it has reduced the value of bred cows by as much as $30 per hundred weight just to kill. Bred cows just aren’t worth as much as a result of losing this support. Many of the small, older, thinner, and lower quality cows brought a small premium to slaughter price. A young average replacement cow can be purchased from $1100- $1300 but most wanting replacements desire only strong top of the line cows in good calving condition and are willing to pay more for them.. Fleshy, very thin cows, or anything with marginal stretch are less popular.
