Fairview Sale Barn Bred Cow Sale

The bred cow sale consisted of 160 head and was well attended with the seats full. The market was very good considering two very important facts we have to use for comparison: 1. Feeder calves are bringing considerably less and 2. The price of slaughter cows is generally only in the 40’s and 50’s. Without these factors, bred cows are worth much less than in the past. Still, prices tonight were very fair and reflect the market as it now stands.

In the price breakdown, 2^nd and 3^rd stages were lumped together as we are in the time of year where it makes little difference between the two.

The best 3 and 4 year cows 1150# to 1475# brought from $1300 to $1675. A few smaller and lesser in quality ranged from $1000 to $1255.

5 and 6 year olds 1200# to 1600# sold from $1300 to $1600 with the rest at $1250 and down.

7 and 8 year olds 1200# to 1550# went from $1100 to $1300. Small and/or off quality brought $1050 and down.

9 yr olds and solid mouth cows saw the best go from $1000 to $1225. Several thin and/or lacking in quality brought much less.

Aged and broken mouth cows for the most part were very thin and not real desirable and sold accordingly. Almost all brought well under a thousand dollars.

The few bred heifers in the sale were very small with some only weighing in the 8’s which is not nearly big enough by today’s standards.
