Day/Bred Cow Sale
Cow Sale:
317 head sold at the Tuesday cow special. A usual, late season
sales are not as popular as earlier ones and this was no exception.
Pairs sold well overall. Bred cows were a more difficult sale.
Most were summer calving, late for the spring calving herds and too
early for fall calving ones, and did not fit anyone's program.
With pastures full, and herds already filled at this time of year,
summer cow trade is always a risky proposition. Owners, if
they have the facilities, and the time to calve cows out, would be
money ahead to wait and sell pairs. The cows bred for true
fall calving sold well enough if they were young and had a lot of
eye appeal.
74 cow calf pairs (1 had twins) sold with the top fancy, young ones
bringing between $2000 and $2250. Goods sold from $1700 to
$1950. Average brought $1500 to $1700 and the rest brought
$1450 and down.
155 bred cows sold. With little difference in price, 2nd and
3rd periods are lumped together in this report. Top 3 to 6
year old cows brought $1400 to $1500, average went from $1275 to
$1350, and the rest were $1300 and down. 7-8-SS-aged cows
topped at $1225 with many in the $1050 to $1200 range. The
rest brought $1050 and down. A few smaller bred heifers
brought $1200 and down.
5 breeding bulls sold with the top one bringing $2025.
Thursday the 8th is a feeder special and will have 1000+ head.
A red hot slaughter market with prices 5.00 to 6.00 higher compared
to last week on the choice grading cattle. Select grades sold
weak to 3.00 lower as packers scramble to buy the choice cattle and
reluctant to bid on the selects. With the
select spread sitting at a 25.00 discount, I guess I can't blame
them!
Cull cows & bulls sold fully steady.
