Market Report Breeding  Stock November 1, 2016

113 cattle were offered in the season’s first breeding stock sale. It was well attended and bidding was very competitive. This was a small sample size, but gives us our first hint at what prices might be as we enter the season when the bigger runs begin. The run consisted of 39 cow/calf pairs, 71 bred cows and 3 breeding bulls.

39 pairs: Overall quality was very good.

20 head of 3 and 4 year old pairs 1300# to 1450# brought from $1500 to $1850. The size of the calf was instrumental in the final price with newborns at the lower end as usual. 7 pairs 5 and 6 years weighing  1450# to 1700# brought from $1550 to $1800. Older pairs 1450# to 1700# ranged from $1125 to $1400 with some older and lighter of mixed ages selling from $925 to $1050.

71 bred cows: Overall quality was also very good for the most part.

29 black 3 and 4 year olds weighing from 1250# to 1400# sold from $1500 to $1800 with size and genetics at the top of the list.18 head of 5 and 6 year olds weighing from 1270# to 1500# brought from $1250 to $1500. The older cows from 1100# to 1450# ranged from $850 to $1100. A few very small bred heifers and older cows brought from $600 to $950.


With harvest nearing an end, the run of slaughter steers & heifers picked up as 268 head sold at Fairview Sale Barn today.  The fed market was mostly 3.00 higher on a top of 108.25.

Cull cows were also more abundant and sold 2.00-3.00 lower.  Bulls were also 2.00 lower.
