Tuesday, April 7, 2015 Packer Sale & Bred Cow Sale

Over 200 head of bred cows, cow/calf pairs, and breeding bulls went before a standing-room only crowd. The demand for bred cows of all kinds and ages was very good. Cow/calf pairs went through the roof. Bulls were just so-so as we are getting toward the end of the bull trading season and most have already bought theirs.

92 bred cows sold. Several were from top herds, but were behind in calving. Overall quality was pretty good and demand buyer backed this up. Top 3^rd period young cows weighing from 1300# to 1700# brought from $2650 to $3275. Same weight older cows sold in a ranged from $2000 to $2500. Smaller and lower quality brought less. Young fall calving cows sold from $2000 to $2450.

82 pairs put the buyers in hot pursuit. 21 fancy one owner 1^st calf heifer pairs topped at $4250 and averaged $3740. Another 22 head of 2 and 3 yr olds from several owners averaged $3450. 25 pairs from 4 to 7 years old topped at $3375 with a $2850 average price. Older and smaller pairs sold well from $1750 to $2400 with a $2150 average.  A hand full brought less, but were way back in quality.

27 bulls sold and the market was spotty. The highest offered brought $3600 with most of the others around the $3000 mark. A huge amount of breeding bulls have been sold everywhere so far this spring and most producers have already gotten their replacements. And…there has been no shortage of bulls this year, nor will there be as plenty are still available.  

The post Easter demand for cattle seems to be alive & well as slaughter steers & heifers sold 3-4 higher.  Top was 173.50!

Cull cows & bulls sold steady!  Several younger cows in the mix went back to the farm as high as $162.00/cwt.
