234 Feeder cattle were in the auction. There were very few over 700# with light weight new crops a big majority of the run. Several of these were not weaned, or were weaned for only a short time. Some had vaccinations while others had none. Still, prices remain at historic highs for this time of year with the calf crop returning a huge dividend on investment. As mentioned earlier, the selling of all these light calves, many right off the cow, will result in smaller numbers going to market into the fall and winter. Hold on to your hats because if the fat market carries its steam and if there is as much corn as predicted, it’s hard to tell what a January green, weaned, and vaccinated calf might bring. It will also make the producer think when it comes time to retain heifers. The good ones will be worth a lot of money making the decision to sell or hold a tough one. Just what will that do for increasing the national cow herd is anybody’s guess.
