Tuesday, June 4, 2013- Packer Day
After last weeks light run, slaughter steers &
heifers topped 200 head and slaughter cows and bulls topped 150 head. The
market was mostly steady on the choice cattle and 1-2 lower on select grades.
Slaughter cows sold steady to 2.00 higher & bulls
2-4 higher.
5 breeding bulls--No
mature high quality bulls were offered. The better ones on hand did not pass the
fertility test and were morning weigh-ups. Those that sold in the evening were
primarily yearlings and brought $1000 to $1400.
36 pairs were very popular considering the time of year.
The top 2/3 offered averaged over $2000. 12 smaller framed heifers with small
calves brought $1850.
71 bred cows ranged from $1050 to $1400 for the best.
Considering that about all the bred cows sold were from herds that normally
calve in March and April, the prices were very good. No cows bred to be true
fall calvers were offered and summer calving is not the most popular item.
Producers are parting with them for that reason
