Tuesday, April 2, 2013- Packer Day & Bred Cow Special

Nicer weather brought a bigger run as 200+ slaughter steers & heifers and 150 plus slaughter cows passed thru the ring at Fairview Sale Barn today,

Slaughter steer top was 130.75 with bulk of the choice cattle selling from 115.00 to 129.50.

Cow trade was steady to $2 higher with a $90.00 top!

473 head were offered consisting of 33 bulls, 138 pairs, and 164 bred cows. The house was packed and bidding was briskly active with the heifer pairs drawing the greatest interest.

Pairs

67 of the top heifers weighing 1150# with big strong calves averaged $2411 per head. Smaller heifers with some quality and somewhat smaller calves were $1500 to $2000. A few small heifers with questionable calves were in the $1150 to $1500 bracket. Mature cow/calf pairs sold for a little less than the heifers, but for the most part it was comparable considering they were generally of a little lesser quality.

Bred Cows

The best young black cows brought up to $1900, but were few in number. Other cows including those with age brought a premium to slaughter price of $50 to as much as $400. Considering its April this was a more than favorable price especially with grass a ways off and feed scarce and expensive.

Bulls

The top bull brought $2800 with most of the others bringing $2000 and less as most bull buyers already have bought theirs and the big demand period is past.
